Freshman Class

“New York's great storytellers have a lot in common with the city's anthology of superheroes—one-in-a-million rare, celebrated in perpetuum, and usually the product of character-defining experiences that they endured and ultimately came out on top of. The same guy could become Batman or Norman Mailer. You might as well be somebody.”

Deriving their name from hip hop mag XXL's annual new talent issue, the Freshman Class crew returns to Bowery Poetry Club, this time to imagine a dystopian New York consumed by its own cliches--will it survive the inevitable hurricane flood, the gentrification of Rikers Island, even an impeached Trump's mayoral campaign? The team laments what could be in a series of poems, essays, monologues, and freestyle bars.
