"Your Poetry Education on the Bowery"
Session 3: Beatnik 101: Poet/Rocker Steven Taylor introduces the Beat Generation, its historical context and aesthetic roots, with particular focus on Allen Ginsberg's role in the movement leading up to the publication of its definitive poetic document, Howl.
POETRY U: Eight master poet-educators teach their favorite eras/movements in the form and the poets who lead them. Attend at least seven of the eight classes and receive a POETRY U certificate. $20 for a single class, $100 for a season pass (available at any session). Coffee and granola bars included.

Steven Taylor toured and performed with Allen Ginsberg for twenty years. He has been member of the seminal poetry-rock band the Fugs since 1984 and is a former chairman of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, where he taught poetry workshops and literary theory seminars from 1995-2008. He currently teaches songwriting workshops at the Naropa Summer Writing Program and is visiting faculty in the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance at Wesleyan University.
