“The Key Ceremony” is a feature film by Jeffrey Cyphers Wright and Lili White that celebrates the group of poets, artists and muscians that developed around the Dias y Flores Community Garden on East 13th Street. For a decade the garden hosted a party every single month. When Wright was kicked out for questioning the board and told to surrender his key, people brought symbolic keys in solidarity. In all, 41 keys were given to Wright — one key for each of the 41 gardens in the East Village. The cast includes dozens of artists, musicians, poets and gardeners including Colette, Ford Crull, Judy Rifka, Debra Jenks, Eung Ho Park, Jesus-Papoleto Melendez, Lydia Cortes, Jane LeCroy, Dorothea Lasky, Hal Sirowitz, Steve Dalachinsky. Susan Yung, Ron Kolm, Yuko Otomo and many others. Interviews with Bob Holman and Benjamin Heim-Shepard. Plus an original score. This movie is at once an homage to freedom and an indictment of tyranny.
