Thrilled to present the second showcase of Bayan, or expression in Farsi, an afternoon of music, storytelling and art through the eyes of Iranians and Iranian-Americans at Bowery Arts + Science.

Music by celebrated Persian blues and jazz singer, Rana Farhan, storytelling by founder of the Peoples Improv Theater, actor & former SNL writer, Ali Farahnakian, and featuring the writing of Esther Amini read by Sade Namei. The event will also feature art by Zeynab Izadyer, curated by Mohammad Golabi from SVA.

RANA FARHAN - Rana Farhan is a world renowned Iranian blues and jazz singer, whose music transcends time and erases all borders. Born in Iran, Rana grew up inspired by American blues and rock, eventually, moving to New York where she teamed with guitarist/ producer Steven Toub for her first full-length CD “The Blues Are Brewin’”, a collection of American jazz and blues standards.

Farhan’s second release “I Return”, a unique fusion of classical Persian poetry with contemporary blues and jazz music set the world on fire and introduced audiences to a genre uniquely her own. Rana has performed to packed houses all over the world including Yoshi's in San Francisco, The Toronto Opera House, and the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles. Her new album "Attar Boulevard" of eight original songs fusing Persian poetry with contemporary R&B, soul and blues can be found on her website, www.ranafarhan.com.

ALI FARAHNAKIAN - Ali Farahnakian is an American actor, writer, and improvisational comedian. He is the founder of The Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT) in NYC and co-starred in the Adult Swim comedy series Delocated. Farahnakian was born in Iran but grew up in North Carolina. He has performed at Chicago's Second City, ImprovOlympic and was one of the original founding members of the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB). In 2001, his one man show "Word of Mouth" was featured at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival.

Farahnakian wrote for Saturday Night Live in the 1999–2000 season and appeared for many years as a sketch performer on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Farahnakian has appeared in films such as Edge of Darkness and Arthur. He has made guest appearances on television programs such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 30 Rock, and Louie. In 2012. Farahnakian has also written for the MTV sketch series Human Giant.

ESTHER AMINI - Esther Amini is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice, and a writer. Her stories have appeared in Elle Magazine, The Jewish Week, Barnard Magazine, Inscape Literary Journal, Tablet, and Lilith. Four stories of her pieces are currently being performed in Los Angeles by The Jewish Women's Theatre. Her work was also featured in the production Saffron and Rosewater presented at the 92nd Street Y. Follow her on Facebook.
