The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics convenes a monthly encounter of artists and activists to rehearse for a better world.
In this series of encounters, alumni of EMERGENYC, a program for arts and activism run by the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, will mix with activists and performers from across NYC’s political and performance communities. Celebrating vital voices from different backgrounds, ages, genders, and genres, SUBMERGE will confront issues of race, class, sexuality, migration and other topics that are often absent from the city’s other stages.
This premiere presentation of the SUBMERGE series kicks off a week-long celebration of the Hemispheric Institute's 15th anniversary -- marking a decade and a half of studying and supporting the intersection of art, performance and social movements across the Americas -- with sets by renowned queer performers STEVEN LAWSON (of 2boys.tv) and D'LO, along with innovative playwright MFONISO UDOFIA, African dance artist SIMBA YANGALA, and EMERGENYC alumni BENJAMIN LUNDBERG and FRANTZ JEROME (performing with hip-hop artist TOMMY SHEPHERD), with DJ sets by musician JULIAN MESRI.
Curated by SUSANA COOK, JADELE MCPHERSON & DAN FISHBACK
Tickets: $5, available at the door
