Lakiyra "Oompa" Williams is a hood, queer, black, orphan, auntie, sister, friend, and teacher from Roxbury with a soft spot for lyricism and storytelling. Her art pulls from stories in her life that depict the interplay of her many identities and the struggle to make meaning of them all. The child of a southern black woman raised in the 30s, Oompa is heavily inspired by sounds ranging from Motown to Marley; The Lox down to Kendrick Lamar. The way that R&B and Hip-Hop play together in her poetry and music leave no room to second-guess how true to being a 90s baby she is.
She is a member of the 2016 House Slam team which placed third at the National Poetry Slam competition this past August. She is a 2016 Vox Pop Slam Tournament Champion, an official unofficial Beyoncé aficionado, a member of Flatline Poetry and HipStory, and just released her first on her first Hip-Hop album, "November 3rd" last week.
She has been featured at a number of different colleges and universities including Bucknell University, Boston University, Boston College, Mass. College of Art, Berklee College of Music, and Emerson College. She was featured at the Somerville Hip-Hop festival and has featured at a number of different slam poetry and Hip-Hop venues and radio stations across the east coast (and San Diego).
When it's all said and done Oompa wants to make art that the people can feel, touch (and be touched by)--music people will remember and love for years to come. Everything she does is for the liminal figures and the bodies without voices people want to hear.
