Flash Fiction Workshop with Francine Witte | Sep 8 - Oct 6
Workshop concentrating on one of the hottest new genres in the literary world: flash fiction.
People love flash fiction (stories under 1000 words) for their concise and inventive method of storytelling. Not merely a matter of word count, though, flash has an intensity that separates it from a vignette or anecdote. A good flash should haunt you long after you've read it.
To this end, there are certain techniques language, style, the use of the surreal, and the unsaid, among others that will be covered in this class.
Each week, one or two of these techniques will be discussed with examples of published flashes using these techniques, as well as writing exercises.
The workshop will be generative in nature.
Francine Witte is the author of four poetry chapbook, one full-length collection, and the forthcoming, Theory of Flesh from Kelsay Books. Her flash fiction has appeared in numerous journals, anthologized in the most recent New Micro (W.W. Norton) and her novella-in-flash, The Way of the Wind is forthcoming from Ad Hoc Fiction, as well as a full-length collection of flash fiction, Dressed All Wrong for This which is forthcoming from Blue Light Press. She live in New York City, USA.

From Page to Stage: Exploring Our Histories & Creating New Forms, a poetry workshop with Dorothy Friedman August
In this workshop we will to expand our creativity in a supportive atmosphere; you will receive writing samples at each class that focus on particular aspects of the writing process; and you will receive personal attention. At each session we will generate new poetry; explore issues such as Identity, Relationships, Language, Voice, etc.; use experimental techniques, such as those developed in workshops with John Ashbery, Barbara Henning, Ann Waldman and others. Therefore, we will explore new approaches to language and form. Workshop provides exercises and in-class writing, as well as tips on how to hone your technique, perform your poems; and get published.
A reading at the end of the workshop is included.
Dorothy Friedman August has been giving poetry workshops for over twenty five years. She is a college professor and teaches at Fordham University and Empire State College. She has also taught creative writing and poetry seminars at Brooklyn College and Pratt Institute. She studied with John Ashbery at Brooklyn College where she received her MFA.
She is an award-winning poet and essayist who has received two New York Foundation of the Arts fellowships and most recently a Kathy Acker Award. Among her publications are three books and numerous article, poems and reviewsin journals, newspapers and anthologies, including The Partisan Review, The Village Voice, The California Quarterly, Hanging Loose, The Centennial Review, Mudfish, Big City Lit, two TRIBES anthologies, including WORD, Bright Hill Press anthology, and three Unbearable anthologies (Autonomedia), including THE WORST BOOK I EVER READ and THE ANTHOLOGY OF SEX. Most recently she has published in The Long Islander, PoetryBay, Sensitive Skin, (who published one of her poems for National Poetry Month) and Home Planet News.

Sundays noon-2pm · five consecutive weeks:
November 17 & 24 + December 1, 8 & 15, 2019
Over 5 consecutive Sundays, we will explore a unique and elegant set of tools and techniques for quickly deepening in poetic understanding and facility. Group and individual writing exercises are supplemented with a poetry reading syllabus and discussion. To write poetry well, you’ve got to read poetry well. Poems for reading and discussion are selected from among the poets Emily Brontë, Robert Browning, Thomas Hardy, Ezra Pound, H.D., Hart Crane, W. H. Auden and Derek Walcott. A complete syllabus will be provided to enrolled students before start of the course.
No prior experience is needed to participate. These workshop sessions present a sequence of group exercises designed to help poets of all types, styles and experience discover and explore a new way of approaching poetry.
Andrew Singer mentored with Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott for an MA in Writing Poetry at Boston University, and he was a first reader in poetry at Partisan Review. He is director and editor-in-chief of Trafika Europe (https://trafikaeurope.org), showcasing new poetry and fiction in English translation from the 47 Council of Europe countries. He is a faculty member at Penn State University, where he has taught creative writing and literary translation, as well as having travel-taught in Europe extensively.
